Fund for Better Health
The AMA Fund for Better Health provides assistance to programs that benefit public health, targeting such areas as violence prevention, substance abuse prevention and physical fitness and healthy nutrition.
The AMA Foundation, with support from the AMA Alliance, launched the Fund for Better Health initiative in 2002 to support public health community service projects in furtherance of the charitable and educational purposes of the AMA Foundation.
Eligibility
- Healthy Lifestyles
To include programs such as nutrition & physical fitness, immunizations, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, skin & other cancer awareness/prevention, teen pregnancy, alcohol, tobacco, & drug prevention/education, smoking cessation and the prevention of favorable depictions of smoking in the media. - Public & Patient Safety
To include public safety programs such as anti-bullying, domestic violence, suicide prevention, teen dating violence and internet safety. To include patient safety programs such as projects that aid an organization's ability to identify and report medical errors, implement proven practices to reduce errors and create provider and consumer awareness of the issue. - Uninsured/Underinsured Projects
To include programs such as clinic projects, health fairs and health screenings that provide care and/or health education to the uninsured and/or underinsured. To include guidance and education to the uninsured and/or underinsured about insurance eligibility. Projects are encouraged to have an emphasis on patient access to quality care.
Special consideration will be given to projects that target the uninsured population.
Funding
A maximum of $2,000 will be distributed to each grant recipient. The number of grant recipients will be determined by the AMA Foundation after all applications have been received. Typically, the number of grants awarded does not exceed twenty-five. An external panel of content experts will oversee the selection of the grant recipients in each category. None of the funds awarded are to pay for staff salary or overhead expenses. Dolores Chandra Fund for Better Health Grants
There is a special grant opportunity for Fund for Better Health grants to be awarded to medical students, residents/fellows and/or related spousal organizations. These grants will support projects which further the charitable and educational purposes of the Foundation and address the topics of substance abuse prevention, violence prevention and healthy lifestyles.
Dolores Chandra passed away in 2005 and the AMA Foundation accepted donations in her memory for this specific fund. Mrs. Dolores Chandra was recognized as a steadfast supporter of the medical community. She served in many leadership positions in the AMA Alliance and the AMA Foundation, including service on the national Boards of both organizations.

Grant recipients must submit a
