Youth Alcohol Awareness Grant Program

Thank you for your interest in the AMA Alliance Youth Alcohol Awareness Grant program. The purpose of this program is to provide seed money for community-based projects that enhance the AMA Alliance’s and AMA’s commitment to eliminating underage drinking and its health and social consequences. Thanks to AMA Past President J. Edward Hill, MD, we were presented with a $5,000 donation from The Smithers Foundation to use in supporting our work in underage drinking.

The Alliance leadership and the Health Promotion Committee have decided to use those funds to encourage grassroots activities that help advance local and state environmental policies that restrict youth access to alcohol, restrict alcohol advertising and encourage enforcement of existing laws.

Goals

Goal 1: Educate local elected officials, members of a community organization or general public about the health and social consequences of underage drinking and the need to change community standards that accept some level of underage drinking.

Goal 2: Gain community member and community leader/elected official support for changing community standards by instituting environmental changes at the regulatory or legislative level.

Who can apply a grant?

  • Any state or county Alliance with a health promotion project that meets the requirements. Note: In any state where more than one county Alliance has applied and meets the requirements, preference will be given to the first county Alliance that applied.

Grant requirements

  • Grant applications should include: cover page, program description, activity timeline and preliminary budget.
  • Grants should seek to show progress toward both of the goals set forth above.
  • All grant must focus on activities with a long-term goal of policy change if possible. Grant funds cannot be used solely for educational purposes. For example, you can not use funds to print a brochure and pass it out to students or conduct a school assembly on the dangers of underage drinking. Activities funded for the grant must connect to a policy initiative.
  • Grant funds may not be used to provide group or individual tobacco cessation programs, underage drinking “say no” prevention programs or curricular activities within public schools.
  • All activities planned must include advocacy strategies, such as a petition drive, public or legislative resolution or a message to the public about the need for environmental policies to reduce underage drinking and its health and social consequences.
