Auxiliary sponsors seminar at AMA Leadership Conference; several changes made in Convention—Reference Committees, Opening Sunday evening, first male delegates; first annual report printed; special committee appointed to recruit resident physician/medical student spouses; Regional Meetings become one Regional Cluster Meeting.
1981
House of Delegates calls for Bylaws revision; Shape Up for Life program focuses on nutrition, physical fitness, stress management; AMA-ERF contributions reach $1.7 million; FACETS newsletter instituted; Nationaline newsletter sent to county presidents and presidents-elect; national headquarters moves to new quarters in AMA headquarters building.
1982
President and executive director attend White House briefing with Nancy Reagan on Drug Use and The Family; Professional Skills Development (PSD) program began; check presented to AMA-ERF for $1,742,913.68.
1983
AMA Auxiliary targets child abuse and drunk driving; President attends White House briefings on teh 1983 budget and on the modernization of strategic arms; year-end statistics showed a total of 6,313 health projects in 761 counties and 49 states. Shape Up for Life continues to be popular; National leaders meet with Ronald Reagan in Chicago.
1984
Mini-Confluences held in Las Vegas and Atlanta; health focus on pre- and post-natal care with a new Shape Up for Life brochure; first AMA National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect; first AMPAC workshop at Leadership Confluence.
1985
Raised more than $1.9 million for AMA-ERF; support groups established for families of impaired physicians and families facing malpractice litigation; Executive Director Hazel J. Lewis appointed to vice presidential level of the AMA.
1986
AMA Auxiliary is asked by the AMA to promote a new anti-smoking public service campaign; 39 states held legislative days at the Capitol and phone banks were set up and utilized in Congressional districts throughout the country.
1987
The first Leadership Confluence II is held; AMA Auxiliary celebrates its 65th Anniversary.
1988
AMA Auxiliary participates in AMA Adolescent Health Initiative; president joined leaders of 17 national organizations at White House at special meeting with Ronald Reagan; the auxiliary was honored for its efforts to prevent drug abuse; House of Delegates approves dues increase to $25 to occur in two increments: a $5 increase effective July 1, 1989, and a $5 increase effective July 1, 1992.
1989
The annual Health Awareness Promotion (HAP) Awards began to honor county organizations for their health and awareness efforts; leaders meet with former First Lady Betty Ford.
