The problem of tobacco in Hollywood has an answer: demand future youth-rated films be tobacco-free and break the ties between the entertainment and tobacco industries. To change the way Hollywood uses tobacco, Stan Glantz, PhD, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, founded the Smoke Free Movies campaign, an education and advocacy-based effort to reduce the value of movies as recruiters for the tobacco industry.
To raise awareness about the harm on-screen tobacco use causes and garner support for the Smoke Free Movies campaign, the New York State Department of Health and the University of California at San Francisco developed the national action program Screen Out!
Goals of the Alliance's campaign
In October 2006,The Alliance joined the Smoke Free Movies movement giving a powerful, national voice to the Screen Out! campaign. Through letter writing, petition and endorsement campaigns, the members of the AMA Alliance will create national public awareness and build a strong base of support for the four solutions set forth by the campaign.
The AMA Alliance has set three goals to be reached during the three-year duration of its Screen Out! campaign:
- Write 800 letters to the Motion Picture Association of America and other decision makers.
- Gather 750,000 parent petition signatures in support of the four solutions set forth by the Screen Out! campaign.
- Garner 1,500 Screen Out! endorsements from parent, political, health and school-based organizations.
To achieve these goals we need the help of all Alliance members. Whether you decide to organize a petition drive, work with local partners on an endorsement, or simply write a personal letter, each member has the power to make a positive impact.
