Screen Out Coverage
Through the Screen Out! program the AMA Alliance wants to raise awareness and promote change that could potentially prevent young children and teens from being influenced to begin smoking. The media has taken notice of these efforts, publishing stories regarding the ongoing push to change the ratings of movies that include smoking to an "R" rating.

Response from the Motion Picture Association of America
In a recent statement the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) made an effort to address the national Screen Out! campaign, vowing to look into the rating system. In the statement they say that "movies that glamorize smoking or movies that feature pervasive smoking outside of a historic or other mitigating context may receive a higher rating." While the issue was addressed, the association did not take a firm stance on the subject citing that "while those pushing this proposal are no doubt well-intentioned, it is important that there is an accurate understanding of the declining prevalence of smoking in non- R rated movies." The AMA Alliance finds it an unacceptable reluctance to take an appropriate action to change the R rating.
