Screen Out! Scholarship Winners Announced

Information about the Screen Out! Scholarships that were given out for the National Advocacy Conference and President's Forum has been announced.  The list below includes the winners and a brief explanation for why they were chosen.  We will also be awarding five $1,000 scholarships for the AMA Alliance Annual Meeting in June.

Linda Izquierdo, Illinois

Linda has been an incredible leader on the Screen Out! campaign throughout her year as the state president of the Illinois Medical Society Alliance.  She has organized three separate petition drives; solicited four organizational endorsements (R.I. Health Dept., Trinity Medical Center, R.I. Medical Society, and the Illinois State Medical Society ),  written letters to the Motion Picture Association of America,  educated her counties on the Screen Out! project while traveling across the state of Illinois.  She has innovatively used the campaign to increase membership in inactive counties and continues to support county leadership with their Screen Out! efforts.

Stacie Fry, Iowa

In the fall of 2007, Stacie helped organize a booth at the Des Moines "Night Eyes" Festival resulting in gathering nearly 2,000 petition signatures to be sent to the Motion Picture Association of America.  Currently she is in contact with JELiowa to partner with a second organized event with the goal of gathering 1,000 signatures.  She has plans to gather signatures at various events this spring and has solicited organizational endorsements from six major hospitals and health care organizations in the Des Moines area.

Kathie Short, Mississippi

As state president for the Mississippi State Medical Association Alliance, Kathie has met with the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and presented the information on Screen Out!  They have agreed to partner with our Alliance to gather petition signatures locally and work with them to organize a table at the local Cinemark Theatre to provide information and collect signatures.  Kathie has also spoken at the Rotary Club of Pass Christian where she gained an organizational endorsement for the campaign.  Finally, Kathie helped organize a Capitol Screening Initiative at the Mississippi state Capitol building where Screen Out! information was passed out and petition signatures were gathered.

Angela Ladner, Mississippi

Angela was one of the first Alliance members to have a letter to the editor published in the statewide newspaper the Clarion-Ledger last year regarding the need for removing smoking from movies.  She recently attended the Southern Regional Conference in Huntsville, Alabama and was an active participant in the Screen Out! half-day training session.  She was also a participant in the Mississippi State Alliance State Capitol Screening Initiative where she helped gather petition signatures and educate members of the public regarding the Screen Out! campaign.
