Smoking Is a Drag at the Box Office
Starting in October 2006, the AMA Alliance partnered with the Smoke Free Movies movement for a three-year project to help raise awareness about the effect smoking in film has on a youth-filled audience, and to eliminate this exposure by putting elevated ratings on those films that feature characters smoking. After three years of letter writing, petition drives, endorsements, and lots of press in support of the cause, Alliance members were happy to learn that their efforts were not in vain. According to a recent article from the Scientific American, it seems the audience would tend to agree. The article outlines the results of an analysis of the box office blockbusters of the past decade that shows films with smoking have grossed less money overall.
