Bullying Awareness

Bullying Prevention:

  • The AMA Alliance recognizes bullying as a major component of its violence prevention program.
  • We support the encouragement of appropriate public and private funding agencies to support research on bullying behavior and anti-bullying interventions.
  • We encourage state and county Alliances to work with their state and county medical associations, law enforcement and other agencies and interested parties in utilizing and disseminating materials that will help schools, teachers, parents, and others to address bullying at the local level.

Here are the facts:

  • Bullying is not just kids being kids!
  • Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.
  • The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.
  • Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.
  • Bullying can advance to serious illegal behavior such as hazing, harassment, and stalking in adults.
  • Bullying is a learned behavior that fails to show respect.
  • Bullying is NOT normal or acceptable behavior!
  • Survey Statistics about bullying among children:
    • 20% say they have been a bully
    • 50% say they have been a victim
    • 80% are regularly bystanders
    • A child needs an adult to help when dealing with a bully.  Learn how to lessen the hurt and harm of bullying.
