History of Project

In 1999 Dr. Wayne M. Sotile partnered with the American Medical Association Alliance (AMA Alliance) to evaluate physician marriages, their partners, and life in medicine. Since the original survey we have seen significant changes in the way that medicine is practiced and delivered, changes in how physician families are defined and organized, and advances in technology that connect us to one another in real time.. It is our desire to measure the health and well-being of physician families in a comprehensive way. We are honored to have Dr. Wayne M. Sotile and Dr. Tait Shana felt as collaborators on this project.

Results of the Survey

The Physician Family Experience Survey was open March 27–April 15, 2023. During that time 1,756 participants representing every stage of the medical journey answered 94 questions on topics from finances and parenting to perceptions of medicine and managing stress.

Initial survey results were presented at the AMA Alliance Annual National Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 3 and have appeared in editions of Physician Family Alliance in Motion magazine. In the fall of 2023 the project received retroactive IRB approval in preparation for academic publication and presentations.

The survey is the beginning of good things to come for physician families everywhere!

“Stop America’s Violence Everywhere” was launched by the AMA Alliance in June 1995. Affiliates across the country recognized the toll that violence was taking in their communities. The AMA Alliance responded with the largest health promotion project undertaken by our membership. Over 700 anti-violence programs covering a broad spectrum of activities have been implemented by county and state affiliates. Many members utilize SAVE resources and distribute our elementary-age hands-on children’s activities “Hands Are Not For Hitting” and “You Can Stop Bullies” (placemats, bookmarks & books). Millions of Americans rely on Medicare for their health care coverage. Unfortunately, the Medicare physician payment system is on an unsustainable path, putting physician practices and patient access to care at risk. Patient and physician stories matter. Policymakers need to hear about how the Medicare payment system impacts communities. Share your story to highlight and draw attention to the importance of Medicare payment reform. Physicians have CME’s. Attorneys have CLE’s. Non-profit leaders now have the AMA Alliance Leadership Academy Certificate Program! Free for all AMA Alliance members. The AMA Alliance Leadership Academy is an annual cohort-based learning experience for anyone who wants to lead with confidence, whether that is in a nonprofit, a school community, a local organization, or a board role. You will learn directly from experienced nonprofit leaders through practical, skill-building workshops, and you can earn a certificate of completion if you choose. Even if you do not pursue certification, the training is still packed with value, and participants receive access to the full library of past workshops for continued learning anytime.

Physician Family Alliance in Motion is the AMA Alliance’s flagship magazine for physician families, and it has been delivering encouragement, insight, and practical resources since its debut in 2015.
